If there is one room in your house that you want to have proper lighting, it is your kitchen. However, the truth is that it can be hard to make sure that your kitchen is properly illuminated.

Want to make sure that your kitchen is properly lit and that you get it right in function as well as style? Well, here are some of the top tips that you are going to need to keep in mind.

Install kitchen task lighting

When you read a book you are going to make sure that you have plenty of light to help you to see properly. However, many people don’t consider the same approach when it comes to their kitchen. There are so many tasks that we carry out in the kitchen, including preparing and cooking food; both of which require plenty of light.

Task lighting is when you place lights in areas that require a little extra touch of light (or that you use a lot). The most common place that you are likely to see task lighting is underneath a cabinet, that is higher up, as this then will shine on a worktop.

Choose ambient lighting

Task lighting is focused on one specific area, however, ambient lighting is always a much more generalised approach. Choosing this type of lighting is going to give you kitchen a much softer and gentler feel and whilst it might be a less in your face approach to lighting, it can still make sure that your entire kitchen appears illuminated and well-lit.

In order to have ambient lighting, the most common things to install are recessed ceiling lights, up lights on top of cabinets and also pendant lights off of the ceiling too.

Opt for accent kitchen lighting

Another common approach to kitchen lighting is what is known as accent lighting (or feature lighting). The main reason for installing this type of lighting is to decorate your kitchen. You will use kitchen lighting to make sure that those key features of your kitchen really stand out. You can also use accent kitchen lighting to make your kitchen seem more three-dimensional, which will give it a larger feel.

If you are looking to install accent kitchen lighting then you might want to take a look at LED strip lights. These can be placed along a mirrored splash back, or you could place them underneath a kitchen island worktop.

The main thing to think about with your kitchen lighting is that it needs to be a combination of style and function too. That way you can have a kitchen that not only allows you to cook amazing meals, but also to have a stylish room to become the heart of your home.
